Who, When, and Why?
Arlina Hill is the heart of Sew Concept. After watching my Mom and Grandmom sew, I began teaching myself sewing at the age of 9 years. Coming from a farming family making my clothes to look like the ones in the windows of JC Penney’s was my ambition. With a hunger to learn as much as I could and to do it the right way, it just seemed normal to me that by the time I was in Jr. High I was the teacher’s assistant in Home Economics. Sewing was my love, and while working a full time job and raising 3 children, I advanced into custom sewing, sewing any and everything from clothing to theatrical costumes, staging drapes, home decor, drapes and bedding, to industrial design camera bags, rain covers and the list goes on. In 1995 I met, married Inventor, Engineer Ken Hill, owner of K Hill Inc.. I had Ken build specific sewing notions for my use that just had not been invented and were not readily available for purchase.
After retiring in 2005 I found I had never lost my desire to be more efficient and wanting to enhance my sewing skills, I took several classes with Martha Pullen and her A team. After meeting Martha Pullen and showing her some of the notions I had made for my sewing needs she stated there was nothing like them on the market, they were new concepts and they were needed by other sewist. She ask for me to be passionate about my inventions and to have them ready for market the following year when the next show came through Arlington Texas. Her challenge and encouragement was the catalyst to redesign and make our products market ready.
These new concepts began Sew Concepts journey of designing new notions to fill the sewing enthusiast request, trade shows, and our e commerce store. This year 2016, we have set up a new studio where I now hold classes in sewing, embroidery and quilting. And yes, I am still learning. There is such a talent of sewist to learn the latest and newest techniques from, and in turn share with others.
Now as a Mother, Grandmother, Great-grandmother, designer, inventor, author, teacher and servant, my life is full.
